Very funny - and useful! Seriously, if I had a dollar for every person I meet who skips breakfast.... I don't know how they do it. I wake up ravenous!

Comment on It Really Has Been A BIG, FAT Lie – The Real Science Behind Dietary Fat, Cholesterol and Your Health by Guy Brandenburg

This is an excellent interview that you need to read.

Gary Taubes is apparently the only researcher who has read ALL of the science papers on diet and health for he past 150 years. His conclusion? The standard doctrine of Ancel Keyes, the AHA, and AMA that low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets are good for you is 100% wrong. Taubes found that there is not a single study that shows that the low-fat diets really work. But, he found lots and lots of studies which show that high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets are GOOD for you. In other words, Atkins, South Beach and Cave-Man type diets are NOT going to kill you, regardless of what your friends may say. It's the low-fat soy latte with high-fructose corn syrup OR sugar, and the bagel with low-fat cream cheese, that will make you fat and give you a heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a whole syndrome of other, connected, deadly symptoms.

In other words, the standard dietary advice that we have all heard and that most of us have been trying to follow (more or less) for nearly 50 years, has just been one big fat lie.

Josef Brandenburg, who conducted this interview, is the only personal trainer I know of who actually knows enough biochemistry to understand and "digest" these studies and pass his findings along to his clients. I suspect that most (not all) other trainers and advice 'gurus' really don't know what they are talking about at all.

I also recommend reading Josef';s latest book (title escapes me) and Gary Taubes' book, "Good Calories, Bad Calories." But Josef's book is a lot easier to read.

People do indeed workout for reasons other than looking better. Better health & fitness are very important. Aerobics lose the race here too however.

You can get more fit - aerobically, anaerobically in LESS time with anaerobic exercise than you can with aerobics. In fact, 4min of interval training will trump 60min of endurance work for improved cardiovascular fitness.

Interval training and resistance training are also far safer for everyone's joints, but especially if you are overweight. Running 1 mile is 1,500 consecutive plyometric impacts with 4-5x body weight on a single leg without a single break... and it won't do a damn thing about being overweight in the first place. Plus lots of endurance work has a negative impact on your hormone levels.

Here's an email I got:

Did they test for changes in things that actually matter, like lower blood pressure, higher energy level, increased endurance, reduced stress, improved mental health and all of the other benefits of exercise? People exercise for a lot of reasons. It's not all about pounds and inches. Sometimes a run is just a way to get outside or blow off some steam.

Congratulations!!

I just listened to your podcast on Jimmy Moore's site. Excellent!

Ok, that farting video is just disgusting. But, it makes me realize...stinky farts are just not an issue anymore since I've started low carbing. On the rare occasion that I might pass gas, there is very little odor associated with it.

Gotta love the low carb!

Hey Josef,

Perfect timing! Not because of snow, I\'m in San Francisco so snow isn\'t an issue.

But, I am about to go to Thailand for 16 days and I was wondering how I was going to keep my workouts going. (I\'m doing phase 2 of your metabolic blast workout from Primer Magazine)

I tested this stay-at-home workout today. It was intense and I can do it in a small room. I figure I can use a water jug for a weight while traveling.

Awesome!

You should write this up as the perfect workout for road warriors and global nomads. :-)

Cheers,

Craig
